Call of Duty: Vanguard features a narrative campaign set during World War II, following the origins of the first Special Forces unit. Players will experience combat across four major fronts of the war: the Eastern Front, Western Front, North Africa, and the Pacific. The campaign incorporates various playable characters, each with unique abilities and perspectives on the conflict.

The game includes a comprehensive multiplayer component. This offers a range of game modes, including traditional Call of Duty offerings like Team Deathmatch, Domination, and Kill Confirmed. New features in multiplayer include the "Combat Pacing" system, which allows players to select preferred lobby sizes and intensity levels (Tactical, Assault, Blitz). "Champion Hill" is another new mode, an arena-style tournament with limited lives, focusing on strategic weapon and perk usage. The multiplayer also introduces destructible environments and enhanced weapon customization through the Gunsmith system, allowing for up to ten attachments per weapon.

Zombies mode returns in Vanguard, developed by Treyarch. This iteration builds upon existing Dark Aether storylines, introducing new characters and abilities within a round-based survival experience. Players will face hordes of undead enemies, utilize various Perk Covenants, and progress through objectives to unlock new areas and upgrades.
