Redeeming a Steam key takes under a minute. Here is exactly how, followed by fixes for the errors people actually run into.

On the Steam desktop app

1. Open Steam and sign in to your account.
2. Click Games in the top menu bar.
3. Select Activate a Product on Steam.
4. Click Next, accept the subscriber agreement, then paste your key.
5. Click Next again. The game is added to your library and you can start downloading.

In a web browser

Go to the Steam website, sign in, open the account details page and choose the option to redeem a product code. Paste the key and confirm.

On mobile

The Steam mobile app supports redeeming codes from the account menu. If you cannot find it, use a browser instead — it works the same way.

Common errors and what they mean

• "This code is not valid" — usually a typo. Copy and paste the key rather than typing it, and check you have not included a trailing space.
• "This product is not available for purchase in this country" — the key is region-locked to a territory other than yours. This is why we state the region on every product page before you buy.
• "You have already activated this product" — the game is already in your library, possibly from a bundle or an earlier purchase.
• "Too many activation attempts" — Steam limits failed attempts to around ten per hour. Wait an hour and try again.

About GLOBAL keys

A Steam key marked GLOBAL has no regional restriction. It works on any Steam account anywhere in the world. If you want to avoid activation problems entirely, GLOBAL keys are the safest category to buy.
