How to Activate a Game Key on Steam, Xbox, PlayStation and Battle.net (2026 Guide)

Buying a game key is the easy part. If you have never redeemed one before, the next step can be confusing — every platform hides the redemption screen somewhere different, and error messages rarely explain what actually went wrong.

This guide covers all four major platforms, plus the two problems that account for most failed activations.

Before you start: check your region

This is the single most common cause of a failed activation, and it has nothing to do with the key being faulty.

Most game keys are tied to a region. A key sold as EUROPE will not activate on a Steam account registered in the United States. A key sold as UNITED KINGDOM will not activate on a Romanian account, even though both are in Europe.

Your account region is set by the country you selected when you created the account, and on Steam it is also influenced by the payment methods you have used. Check it before you buy, not after.

Every product page on our store states the region in the title and in the description. If you are unsure which region matches your account, ask us before ordering.

Steam

1. Open the Steam desktop client and log in
2. Click Games in the top menu bar
3. Select Activate a Product on Steam
4. Accept the subscriber agreement
5. Paste your key and click Next

The game appears in your library immediately and starts downloading.

If you see "This Steam key is not valid": check for confusion between the letter O and the digit 0, or between I and 1. Steam keys use a 15-character format in three blocks.

If you see "This product is not available for purchase in this country": the key is region-locked to a territory that does not match your account. This is a region mismatch, not a broken key.

Xbox (Series X/S, Xbox One, Windows)

On console:

1. Press the Xbox button to open the guide
2. Go to Store
3. Press the View button to open the side menu
4. Select Redeem
5. Enter the 25-character code

On the web: go to the Microsoft redemption page, sign in, and enter your code there.

Xbox codes are 25 characters. Microsoft Store keys for PC follow the same process.

Important: your Microsoft account region must match the key region. Changing your account region after you have store credit or an active subscription can cause problems, so check first.

PlayStation

1. Sign in to the PlayStation Store on your console or on the web
2. Select your profile icon
3. Choose Redeem Codes
4. Enter the 12-character code

PSN codes are region-locked to the store where they were issued. A US code needs a US PSN account.

Battle.net

1. Log in to your Battle.net account on the web
2. Go to Account Settings
3. Select Redeem a Code
4. Enter your key

The game is added to your Battle.net library and can be installed from the desktop app.

The two errors you are most likely to see

"Code already in use"

The key has already been redeemed on another account. If this happens with a key you just bought, contact the seller immediately — a legitimate store will replace it. Our replacement window is 7 days from purchase.

"Invalid code"

Nine times out of ten this is a typing error. Copy and paste rather than typing manually. If the key came in an email, select it carefully to avoid including trailing spaces.

What to do if activation still fails

Contact support with three things: your order number, the exact error message, and the region shown on your account. Those three details are usually enough to resolve the issue in one exchange.
